Put Chinese New Year in your phone calendar and watch it refuse to sit still. In 2024 it fell on February 10. In 2025, January 29. In 2026 it wandered back out to February 17, and in 2027 it will tuck itself in on February 6. People who grew up with one fixed New Year find this faintly illegal, and the question arrives in our inbox every winter: why does the date keep moving?
The answer is that the traditional Chinese calendar is not one calendar. It is two clocks in the same case — a moon clock for the months and a sun clock for the year — and Chinese New Year is the day you get to watch them strike their annual deal.
Months that obey the moon
The traditional calendar (农历, nónglì) builds its months on the moon and nothing else. A month runs from one new moon to the next, and that cycle — the synodic month — averages about 29.53 days. Since you cannot split a day in half, calendar months simply alternate: some last 29 days, some last 30.
Twelve of those months make a year of roughly 354 days. The Gregorian year, riding the earth's lap around the sun, runs about 365 days. Every lunar year therefore ends about 11 days before the solar year does.
Eleven days sounds like a rounding error. Over time it is a wrecking ball. Left uncorrected, the calendar would fall a full month behind the seasons roughly every three years, and New Year would creep from midwinter into autumn, then into summer heat. A calendar that let that happen would eventually wish you a prosperous new year during the wheat harvest.
The leap month that keeps the seasons in place
Rather than abandoning the moon, the calendar pays it an occasional bonus month. Roughly seven times in every nineteen years, an extra month — a leap month (闰月, rùnyuè) — is inserted, carrying the same number as the month before it. Traditional astronomers compressed the rule into a phrase: seven intercalations in nineteen years (十九年七闰). The arithmetic is quietly beautiful. Nineteen years of twelve months, plus the seven extras, totals 235 lunar months — which lands within a whisker of nineteen trips around the sun.
Where the leap month goes is decided by the sun's own schedule. The sun's annual path is divided into twelve major solar terms (中气, zhōngqì), and the eleventh lunar month is anchored to contain the winter solstice. A lunar month that contains no major solar term at all becomes the leap month. The moon sets the rhythm; the sun decides the edits.
Why the date stays between January 21 and February 20
Because the corrections keep tugging the short lunar years back into line, New Year cannot roam the whole Gregorian calendar. It is confined to a window running from about January 21 to February 20.
Picture a tug of war. Each ordinary year, the 11-day shortfall drags New Year about eleven days earlier on the Western calendar — February 17 slides toward early January, then toward December. Before the date can escape the window, a leap month shovels 29 or 30 days back in and flings it into mid-February again. That is the wandering you see on your phone: early one year, late the next, forever inside one month of late winter. It is also why the festival's other name, Spring Festival (春节, Chūnjié), is not poetic license — the entire machine exists to keep the year pinned near the start of spring.
The nineteen-year echo in your birthday
Here is the part people write to us about. Because 235 lunar months and nineteen solar years nearly coincide, a date on the lunar calendar tends to fall back onto the same Gregorian date every nineteen years, usually within a day or so.
If your family keeps birthdays by the lunar calendar, the two anniversaries tend to collide around ages 19, 38, 57, and 76. Chinese families notice this. A grandmother will mention, almost in passing, that her birthdays have merged again this year. Western astronomy calls the same coincidence the Metonic cycle, after the Greek astronomer who described it, and Babylonian calendar-makers used it too; Chinese astronomers arrived at the same seven-in-nineteen rule from their own observations.
One honest caveat: the echo is usually not perfect. Months of 29 and 30 days do not divide the year evenly, so the collision is sometimes off by a day. Treat it as a strong tendency rather than a warranty.
Lunisolar, not lunar
The technical word for this arrangement is a lunisolar calendar — months from the moon, year length disciplined by the sun. Calling it "the lunar calendar" is harmless everyday shorthand, but it hides the clever part.
The distinction matters because purely lunar calendars genuinely exist. The Islamic calendar keeps twelve moon-months with no leap-month correction, so its months and festivals drift through the seasons across the years — arriving in summer one decade and winter another. The Chinese calendar refused to allow that drift, for the most practical reason available: a calendar meant for farmers must say when spring actually arrives, or nobody knows when to plant.
What the moving year does to your zodiac
One last consequence, and it matters more than most visitors expect. The Chinese zodiac year changes at the festival, not on January 1 — so anyone born in January or February belongs to whichever traditional year was running at the moment of birth.
This is exactly why the internet's favorite shortcut, dividing a birth year by twelve, fails near the seam.
