How Chinese names work
A full Chinese name has two or three characters: the surname first, then one or two given-name characters. Unlike Western names, each character is usually chosen for a real meaning — a wish, a virtue, or a natural image — rather than family tradition alone.
Why elements matter
In traditional naming (wǔxíng míngmíng), characters are often selected so their five-element associations — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — feel balanced and supportive. We include a light touch of this thinking in every name we generate. It's cultural craft, not magic.
How to use your name
Many foreigners keep a Chinese name for travel, tea-house banter, or a pen name for their Chinese friends (pengyou). You'll find it charming to be called "Mùqíng" across a teahouse table. It's a gift, not an identity swap — enjoy it that way.
